SERIOUS FLOODS IN VICTORIA
Town To Be Evacuated
(Received October 19, 10. 10 p.m.)
Melbourne, October 19.
Continuous rains during the night caused serious flooding in Central and Eastern Victoria. A gigantic wall ot’ water is approaching Kooweerup, in Gippsland, and a special train has been rushed to the town to evacuate the inhabitants.
Floods in the Yarra Valley caused heavy losses of stock and serious damage to farms. Many homes near Melbourne arc inundated.
The floods in Victoria have disorganised the Australian land lines. There has been no rain in the metropolitan area since 9 o’clock last night. Most of the rivers and creeks are receding and the general flood peril appears passed. The River Yarra overflowed near Kew and reached the doorsteps of the houses. It partly covered three goif courses and seriously damaged market gardens. A hundred square miles of rich fields and farms has been inundated in southern Gippsland.
