A MOTOR-CYCLIST WHO CAUGHT A TARTAR
Pedestrian Proved to be a Traffic Officer A motor-cyclist who recently made a pedestrian jump for his life at. the corner of Lower Cuba Street and Wakefield Street found to his discomfiture he had “caught a Tartar,” for the pedestrian happened to be Traffic-In-spector P. Hazledon, who promptly “ran him in” for failing to give way to a pedestrian on an authorised street crossing. He was fined 10/- and costs for his indiscretion when he appeared before Mr. W. F. Stilwell, S.M., in the Wellington Magistrate’s Court yesterday. Inspector Hazledon said he was crossing the corner at the authorised spot near the Civic Chambers, had waiteo for the traffic to stop and to allow’ a tram to pass when as he was half-way across he heard a roar, saw a motorcycle approaching, and had to jump forward to get out of its way. He called out and beckoned the man to stop. He took him into the traffic office and told him he was to be charged with failing to give way. The motor-cyclist, Clarence Singleton, replied that it was the inspector’s own fault; had he waited, the motor-cycle would have cleared him easily. “I told him that had I ■waited we would have been buying a wreath for my funeral,” said Mr. Hazledon. “I say he didn’t have to jump out of iny way. I did not cross the pedestrian crossing until after he had told me to come up to his office. I actually stopped to let the man go on,” said Singleton. “I cannot accept that version,” said the magistrate.
