SOCIAL ROUND

Government Departments' Dance Long streamers of the departmental colours, bright blue and white, draped the walls of the Pharmacy Hall last night, when the Departments of Industry and Commerce, Tourist and Publicity held their annual dance. Scenic pictures and posters, placed at intervals round the walls, made a picturesque and effective addition to the scheme of decoration, while streamers of deep red, royal blue and white were woven in an artistic pattern across the ceiling. Many novelty dances were entered into with spirit by the large number present, and clever exhibitions of tap dancing by a well-trained ballet and also of modern ballroom dancing, were greatly appreciated. An excellent orchestra was heard in all the most popular numbers and did much toward furthering the success of the dance.. • ■: A most enjoyable sit-down supper was served in the supper-room, which was decorated with streamers', of .pinkand gold, and with vases of bright yellow daffodils and violets. The committee responsible for the success of the.dance comprised: Miss Jordan, in. a frock of mauve french marked 1 crepe; Miss Stevens, wearing mauve taffeta; Miss Henderson, in a frock of pink net over satin; . For Red Cross Fair A very successful evening was held recently at the home of Mrs. E. Lamberg, Lyall Bay, in aid of the Red Cross fair. The rooms were cheery with huge log fires and spring flowers. A tempting supper was served in the billiardroom, the centre of the table being occupied by a large basket of scarlet berries and flowers. Mrs. E. Lamberg and Mrs. Haslett were hostesses, the former wearing a smart frock of check taffeta in shades of pink, blue, and black. Mrs. Haslett was in black crepe marocain, with a lace cocktail coat. There were many novel attractions to entertain the guests, one item particularly, a “ghost grotto,” being the last word in “spookiness.” Mrs. Miller and Mrs. Arnott sang some delightful songs, the accompanist being Mrs. Heron, and elocutionary items were contributed by Miss Lois Lamberg.
