WELLESLEY COLLEGE
Annual Prize-giving The annual prize-giving ceremony of Wellesley College, postponed from December last year jjeeause of the infantile paralysis epidemic, was held last night in .St. Francis Hall, Hill Street. A large number of parents and friends attended and a play, presented by pupils of the school before the ceremony, was greatly appreciated. In his opening address the chairman. Mr. P. B. Cooke, K.C., said it was no exaggeration that 11)37 was one of the most difficult years the school had experienced. The infantile paralysis epidemic had caused great inconvenience, but he was glad that the Government inspectors had expressed satisfaction will: all activities of the school.
The great value of Hip recent educational conference was referred to by the headmaster, Mr. W. H. Stevens. In the “new education,” he said, the teacher was not permitted to instruct, merely Io create atmosphere, which, however, rhe' child must not be forced to accept. The opinion seemed to be held that self-expres-sion was the educational panacea, but he thought it was exaggerated. ’l’he prizes were presented by Mrs. P. B. Cooke, the list having been published in “The Dominion” previously.
