Special Coaching Scheme WELLINGTON ASSOCIATION GRATIFIED Gratification at the rapid progress already made by the young players selected for special training was expressed at last night’s meeting of the management committee of the Wellington Football Association by Mr. G. F. Aers, who said he was satisfied that the association had never done a finer thing than when it decided to engage Mr. R. Sheffield to coach selected young players with the idea of teaching them the finer points of the game, thereby raising the standard of Soccer in Wellington. “The work we saw them doing was simply amazing. It was a real eyeopener,” Mr. Aers said. There were no physical jerks, but for an hour and a half the coach showed the players different movements —the throw-in, how _ to trap the ball dead, and instep shooting. He said he found the players were not zippy enough, but they are certainly livening up now.” Mr. E. J. Gates: That’s all right, but will they do it on the field? Mr. Aers: It makes a wonderful difference having a man of Mr. Sheffield s calibre there. They respect him and whatever he tells the boys to do he can do himself. This coaching is going to be the finest asset to the game we have. ■ Mr. A. J. Costelloe suggested that next season the association should get clubs to release one or two players and run a team of their own. These players cou d be coached by Mr. Sheffield, and could pass on what they learned to their clubmates. The following players have been, or are to be, asked to undergo special training : K. Yeoman, C. Yeoman (Seatoun), N. Gates, A. Gates, R. Parker (Technical Old Boys), F. Banks, J. Sutton, C. Murray, C. Coveney, G. Cuthbert (Scottish Wanderers), L. Foley, - F. Eager. J. Iraynor, J. Leonard (Marist), J. Hickmott, F. Olliver and L. Heath (Swifts). Campbell Rose Bowl. Though according to the rules of the competition, Auckland should travel to Wellington, the association at a previous meeting agreed to a match for the rank Campbell Rose Bowl (held by Wellington) being played at Auckland and suggested August 14 as a suitable date. A letter from Auckland was read at last night’s meeting suggesting August 21 and stating that the other date was unsuitable because the Australian Rugby League team would be playing at Carlaw Park. . August 21 does not fiuit 'the v» .1 .A., however, as Canterbury have been invited to play Wellington on that date at the Basin Reserve. Pending receipt of advice from Christchurch, it was decided to hold the matter over, and in the event of the Canterbury match taking place to endeavour to arrange a suitable date with Auckland later in the season.. A donation of £2 from Mr. AV. Skinner was acknowledged with thanks. A letter was received from the Poverty Bay association suggesting September 11 or 25 as the date of a match at Gisborne Decision was deferred till finality could be reached with the Canterbury and Auckland matches. Mr. G. F. Aers presided, and there were also present Messrs. C. Ballard, J. Meltzer, H. H. SpolskY, R. Gilpin, A. J. Costello, J. Kean, E. J. Gates and AV. J. Arcus (secretary).
