REARMAMENT SCHEME
British People Realise Necessity “Things have improved; people are in good spirits,” said the Rev. Lawrence Redfern, M.A., 8.D., when commenting yesterday on present conditions in England. Mr. Redfern is visiting New Zealand in the course of a world tour. Everyone in England wars very much concerned about the European situation, he said, but the general opinion was that there would be no outbreak of war. The people had seen that Where there were dictators of boundless ambition the peace of the world was likely to be threatened, but they were rather of the opinion that a lot of the threatening talk was really only “bluff.” The peace feeling had been very strong in England since 191 S, and still was, and it was only with the.greatest reluctance that the people had convinced themselves that a rearmament policy was necessary. Though most people regretted the introduction of the rearmament scheme, they realised. it was a necessity, and co-operated willingly. It was certainly relieving distress by creating employment.
