General Manager’s Explanation
The temporary variations in the arrival of trains at Wellington since the change-over to the new station has been the subject of considerable comment in these columns. Mr. G. H. Mackley, General Manager, New Zealand Railways, when ..pproached regarding the complaint, pointed out that a certain amountof dislocation was inevitable in a major change-over of this nature, but that the causes of train delays were being rapidly overcome. In reply to “Fkast-Bitten,” Mr. Mackley states that he has never suggested that the lateness of trains is something that the public should be prepared to put up with and for “Frost-Bitten” to make such a statement is grossly unfair. “The punctuality of trains is a matter,” continued Mr. Mackley, “that every member of the service recognises as being of the first importance and is one that controlling officers watch with great care. “Taken over the whole field of the departmnet’s operations it has a very satisfactory record, although on occasions delays do occur due to the difficulties associated with single-line operation and circumstances over which the department has no control. “Every station at which a member is in charge is kept posted with the running of all trains, and it is the duty of those in charge to keep the public’ informed when a train is behind schedule.” Answer to Correspondent “Main Body” (Wanganui): Your letter should he submitted to the journal in which the reference appeared.
