YOUNG FARMERS’ CLUBS
South Taranaki Gathering About 50 members of the South Taranaki Young Farmers’ Clubs assembled at Patea bn Tuesday morning. Mr. I’. O. Veale, Haweru, chairman of the South Taranaki district committee, welcomed the party at the Presbyterian Hall, and Mr. F. Ramsbottom, mayor of Patea, aleo extended a welcome. Mr. W. A. Slieat, president of the South Taranaki Farmers’ Union, paid a tribute to the work of the elub in developing a greater interest in'agricultural affairs and retarding the drift to the towns, lie complimented Mr. J. E. Davies, Department of Agriculture, who is directly responsible for the local organisation, on the growtli and popularity of the movement in South Taranaki.
A comprehensive and instructive programme was carried out during the day, including a visit to the Patea freezing works, under the direction of Mr. Alexander, veterinarian. Department of Agriculture. An outline of the aims and objects _of the organisation was given by Mr. S. Freeman, Dominion organising secretary, recent activities of the clubs throughout New Zealand being dealt with. Mr. C. J. Hamblyn. fields superintendent, Department of Agriculture, gave an address on seeds, stressing the need and value of purity and germination certificates, etc.
In the evening Mr. P. O. Veale. of the Dairy Research Laboratory, Hawera, gave a very interesting address dealing with the progress of modern soil chemistry. He was followed by Mr. A. W Hudson. of Massey College, who used lantern slides to. illustrate his lecture, which dealt mainly with the recent advances in grassland research.
