SOCIAL EVENING

For Free Kindergarten The July social evening of the Free Kindergarten was held at the Airport Tearooms, and in spite of bleak, wintry weather, a very gratifying attendance of members was recorded. A represent-a-song competition, which brought forth many clever and original in personations, was won by .Mrs. Pengelly, and a black-and-white competition was won by Mrs. McKendrick. Miss Doris Stevenson being second. Musical items were given by Miss Thorn Butters and Mrs. Pengelly, and duets by Miss L. Beere and Mrs. O’Dea. Mis. Bodman was the accompanist. Short plays were acted by Misses M. Webster, T. Spence, and D. Stevenson. The usual home-made supper was served by the committee. Wellington Girl's Degree Miss Helena F. Gibbs, who matriculated at Queen Margaret College, Wellington, and who graduated B.Se. at Victoria University College. Wellington, has been awarded the degree of Ph.D. in Zoology at Leeds University. The subject of her thesis was “The Development of the Skin and Hair of the Australian Opossum.” Miss Gibbs would like very much to do further re-' search on this and related matters before leaving England, and she now has this under consideration. Mr. A. Gibbs and his daughter will shortly be making a motor tour of Central England, and then intend to go to Paris. To Visit Christchurch Miss Joyce Nolan, Wairoa, Hawke’s Bay, will arrive at Christchurch on Tuesday to be the guest of Mrs. J. F. Duncan, Rossall Street, for the races next month. Miss Monica Murphy, Gisborne, will also stay with Mrs. Duncan during race week. Touring In Taranaki Mrs. R. Simpson and Miss Simpson, Fitzherbert Avenue, Palmerston North, Mrs. A. Cameron and Miss Cameron, “Aldersyde,” Turakina, and Miss M. Cyprian-Lee, “Beresford,” Feilding, are touring in the Taranaki province.
