The Earthquake of 1848

The great earthquake of October 22. IS4S, was recorded as being the severest felt in New Zealand up till 1855, the centre being near Wellington and Cloudy Bay. The shock lasted more than five minutes. It occurred at midnight amid an intense calm, and the sky representing an unusual beauty, after a brilliant sunset. Great damage was done to houses and properties, including a fissure of extensive length at Kaiparatehau. The quake was accompanied by a violent storm at Wellington. The panic caused by this phenomenon induced families to leave New Zealand, many .sailing by a barque leaving for Valparaiso for flour supplies.—E.G. (Feilding).
