First Public School
St. John's College, the first public school established in New Zealand, was opened at Waimate, near tlie Bay of Islands, in 1842. The college was founded by Bishop Selwyn on the plan of King’s College, London, and was meant to be the nursery of tlie ministry, and the centre of sound learning to New Zealand. As Waimate was found to be too far from the centres of European population, the college was removed to Tamaki, facing Mt, Itangitoto and overlooking the beautiful harbour of Auckland and the Gulf of Hauraki.— E.R.H. (Wanganui).
