ILLEGAL BETTING
New South Wales to Attempt Suppression (Received July 24. 12.45 a.m.) Sydney, July 23. ■ Convictions for illegal betting within the Sydney metropolitan district and Newcastle for the six months to June 30 numbered 1800 and fines amounted to £13.427. The Government contemplates stamping out starting price betting along the lines of the Queensland legislation and the fatter will be a major issue in the forthcoming State elections. "The suppression of' starting price belting shops and other channels for off-the-course betting has been responsible for a complete revival of racing throughout Queensland.” declared Mr. I’. O'Shea, chairman of the Queensland Turf Club at the annual meeting in Brisbane to-day. ■ Mr. O’Shea pointed out that in 1926 his club had a peak profit of £13.665. but with the spread of the betting shon, profits tumbled to £3150 in 1932, £964 in 1933, a,nd £695 in 1934. while in the past year the profit had risen to £7660.
