GAELIC CLUB EVENING
At the monthly Ceilidh of the Wellington Gaelic Club Saturday a successful evening’s entertainment was enjoyed by an unusually large gathering. Mrs. A. Mac Vicar, the president, welcomed all members and visitors in both Gaelic and English, and appealed for enrolments for th • adult and junior Gaelic choirs and for entries for the Gaelic song competi-ti-n to be held in connection with the New Zealand National Eisteddfod . In July. Proceedings opened with selections by the club pipe band under Pipe-Major A. Graham, followed by Gaelic songs by Mrs. K. Wilson and Mr. Gordon Mcßaia. Scots songs by Miss C. Shanks and Gaelic and Scots songs by Mrs. MacWhinnie. Miss Grade Mac Kay danced the sword dance and sheau t.riubhais, and Miss Nancy MacDonald the Irish jig and Irish hornpipe. The club orchestra • was under the capable leadership of Mr. W. Newlands. A feature of the evening was the playing of the “Island Shielir. Song” and the “Eriskay Love Lilt,” and Mrs. G. Gunn laid down her violin to sing these two beautiful songs in their original G setting. Mr. L>. Mae Diarmid was efficient M.C. for the dances, which were' included in a lengthy programme, and all thoroughly enjoyed old-time favourites. Tffe music for the dances was snpplu'd by Mrs. London (piano), Messrs. W. and R. Ncwlands (violins) and Pipers A. Graham and J. MaeCallum. and the accompaniments for the vocal items were pluycd by Ijondon flud Mrs. K - . Mdson. Slipper was served under the direction of Mrs. J. MacArthur.
