TOLL OF THE ROAD
Seventeen Fatalities During April DECREASES SHOWN Fatalities on roads throughout New Zealand during April totalled 17, and 190 persons were injured, according to figures supplied by the Transport Department. Since the road safety campaign was put into operation Inst September, the number of deaths through accidents Ims declined. From September 1 until the en ilof April there were 124 deaths, as compared with 152 for the last cor responding period, a decrease of 22.5 per cent., and during the last four months the dentils fell from 8(1 to 77. The decreases have been made in spite of the fact that this year there are 27,500 more vehicles op the roads. Since September 1 the numbe r of persons reported to have been injured is 1225. The figures for the fatalities cannot be taken ns .■iccuritte, its in Home eases persons who have been reported as Injured have died later.
