FINAL HAWERA GALLOPS
Greek Gold Impressive Dominion Special Service. Hawera, May 10. Work on the Hawera tracks this morning was of an interesting nature, when a number of horses engaged at the Egmont meeting were allotted their final gallops. ’l’he best gallop of the morning went to the credit of Greek Gold, who revelled in the heavy ground. The course proper was open, with the pegs well out, and the going was heavy. Several fine schooling bouts were also seen, the best effort being that of Monastic, who impressed over a round of the steeplechase fences in company with Pahu and Sky Pilot. Flying Chief (Burnet) and Red Manfred. (Caffyn) finished together at the end of five furlongs in I.BJ. Both horses shaped satisfactorily. River Feale (Mills) sprinted two furlongs in 27J. International (Houton) shaded One Whetu (Caffyn) at the close of six furlongs in 1.23. International had a good deal the better of the weights, but nevertheless was working very well. One IVhetu also pleased. Tout le Monde (Houton) and Cynical Kid (Bernei) were companions in a mile working gallop without making time. Vadanoe (Caffyn) jumped off at the half-mile post, and, picked up by Le Grand (Houton), over the last three furlongs, completed the distance in 54J. Greek Gold (Ridgway) was going comfortably alongside Fafner (Hawkes) at the end of half a mile to record 53J, a smart effort. The first-named is a noted mudlark, and his effort earned him many friends for Egmont engagements. The Hawke’s Bay owner-trainer, R. Gregory, arrived by float yesterday afternoon with Wasteland and Hunting Spy. The pair were on the tracks this morning and sprinted two furlongs separately in 26. Golden Orchid (Hawkes) shaded Waiwhetu (Pepperill) at the end of three furlongs in 40 -1-5. Friesland (Monkley) was not troubled to hold Golden Rill (Cole) over five furlongs in 1.111. Surella was apportioned two rounds of pace work on the sand. Master Limond (Fryer) and Corowa (Hawkes) were companions over a mile on the sand for a working gallop. Boughal (IV. Grindlay) jumped four hurdles satisfactorily. He was inclined to run his fences down, and jumped high. However, he will do better in company. Dancing Lady (Grindlay) gave a good display over three hurdles, jumping fast and cleanly. Monastic (M. Conway), Pahu (G. Ridgway) and Sky Pilot (R. Smith) set out to cover a round of the steeplechase fences, eight in all. At the first of the double Sky Pilot, on the outside, crowded the other pair, and Monastic baulked. After jumping the double Sky Pilot and Pahu were pulled up and brought back. Starting off again tlie trio fenced splen■didly, Monastic leading all the way from Pahu and Sky Pilot, although there was little between them at the finish. Monastic pleased most, and appears likely to pay his way on the circuit. Pahu jumped faultlessly, and is of the plodder type whic halways has a jumper’s chance in cross-country events. Sky Pilot was having his first schooling lesson in bad ground, and jumped carefully. He is a splendid type of horse to make a ’chaser, and with a little more experience should make good.
