Parking in Streets “The parking of cars in residential street crops up with every ■deputation we have,” said Cr. J. Read at the meeting of the works committee of the Wellington City Council yesterday afternoon. Speaking on this subject to a “Dominion” reporter, the city engineer (Mr. K. E. Luke) said he thought the only effective way of checking all-night parking in the streets was to refuse to issue registration papers for any car unless the owner produced proof that he had a garage in which to house it, or that he had made some adequate arrangement to garage his car elsewhere. Melanesian Mission. Before the Melanesian Mission's ship Southern Cross sailed last night, members of the mission conducted a- public meeting in St. Peter’s schoolroom. There was a fairly large attendance, and addresses were given by Mr. John Wilson. Melanesian Mission representative in New Zealand, the Rev. 11. V. C. Reynolds, a missionary from the New Hebrides, and by several of the Melanesians. Then and Now. The earliest days of Canterbury College were recalled by the chairman of the college council (Mr. C. T. Asciiman) at the graduation ceremony. He said it was the fifty-seventh ceremony that had been held for*the conferment of degrees, in 1878, he said, two degrees were conferred, but in 1937 the number of Canterbury College students who had been awarded degrees was 154. There were 123 degrees to be conferred that afternoon, and also 16 diplomas, and 25 degrees had already been conferred on Canterbury College students. In addition, 30 others had qualified by examinations for degrees and nine for diplomas. Tribute to Hon. P. Fraser. “I am not a Labour supporter, but I wish we had more Ministers in New Zealand like Mr. Peter Fraser.” said the chairman, Mr. R. H. Nimmo, at a meeting of the Boy Employment Committee yesterday. Mr. Nimmo was a member of the deputation from the Wellington Chamber of Commerce which waited upon the Acting-Prime Minister in regjtrd to the basic wage and its effect upon the placement of youths. “We found Mr. Fraser most reasonable,” said Mr. Nimmo. “When we cited a specific case of hardship -e replied without any hedging or beating about the bush, ‘We never intended that to happen.’ ” Power Station Equipment. Additional equipment for the Wellington electricity department’s auxiliary power-station at Evans Bay is being landed at Wellington this week, and the completion of the extensive work being done there is now in sight. A total of 150 tons of equipment is now at the wharves, the greater part of which was brought by the Akaroa, Tpngariro, and Doric Star. The final ghinments from London were made by the Westmoreland, which arrived today, and the Port. Chalmers, which is due to arrive on May 20. A big task was accomplished yesterday when a large section of one of the Velox boilers. weighing over 19 tons, was transferred from, the wharves to Shag Point. Packed in its great wooden case, and drawn by two heavy motor-lorries, it made an impressive sight as It trundled along the city streets.
