Unidentified Man Dies in Hospital SEVERE HEAD INJURIES Knocked down by a taxi at tlie corner of Lambton Quay and Molesworth Street. Wellington, about 9.20 p.m. yesterday, an elderly man who had not been identified last night received severe head injuries, a fractured right arm and concussion. He was taken to hospital by the Free Ambulance, but did not regain consciousness and died shortly after 10 pan. It is understood that a newspaper in the num’s pocket bore tlie inline “Mr. Bruce.” CAR STRIKES BANK As a result of a motor-car striking, a bank about a mile north of Paekakariki yesterday afternoon, Mr. Poi Young, Napier, a fruiterer, received concussion, a fractured cheek-bone, and abrasions to his hands and face. After receiving attention by the district nurse, he was removed to hospital in tlie Free Ambulance. Late last night he was reported to have regained consciousness and to be progressing satisfactorily. FOUR PEOPLE INJURED IN AUCKLAND SMASH Motor-car Collides Head-on With Tram By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, May 9. Four persons were injured when the motor-car in which they were travelling, an old model tourer, collided head-on with a city-bound tram on the Great South Road near the Dilworth School about 10 minutes after midnight on Saturday. Three of the four who were in the ear were thrown on to the road aud all were taken to the Auckland Hospital. None of the passengers in the tram was injured. The following are the injured : — Cyril Francis Green, aged 32, unemployed, of Ellerslie, head injuries. Frederick Lindblom, aged 32, unemployed electrician, Newton Road, head injuries. Ivy Cavcuett, aged 40, married, Parnell, head injuries. Edna Salisbury, aged 25, single, factory worker, Mount Eden, head injuries. Tlie motor-car was completely wrecked, aud so severe was the impact that the engine was forced back several feet through the floorboards into the driver’s compartment. The bonnet and the front portion was a shapeless wreckage, seats were thrown out on to the road, doors were torn off and the hood collapsed. Glass and other portions of the car were strewn across the road from kerb to kerb and the vehicle was so badly broken up that it was impossible to tow it away. It was dragged to the side of the road until morning. Very little damage was done to the tram, the front bumper was slightly dented, as well as the front of the motormail’s cab, while the windscreen and lamp were smashed. The motorman escaped uninjured, but tlie conductor was thrown half the length of the tram and twisted his back. He was not in need of medical attention. The passengers in the tram escaped with a severe shaking. The scene of the accident was soon thronged with several hundred people, including women in evening frocks returning from dances and parties, while nearby residents came out in pyjamas and dressing gowns to render assistance. A working bee was formed, and for half an hour its members were engaged iu sweeping the road with buckets of water and stiff yard brooms. DEATH FROM INJURIES Car Fails to Negotiate Corner Ey Telegraph—Press Association. Christchurch, May 9. Mr. Alex. T. Waddell, managing director of Thos. Waddell and Sons, steelfounders, Christchurch, died this afternoon from injuries received when a car driven by his wife struck a stone culvert near Amberley on Saturday evening. The accident took place at the corner of Swamp Road and Douglas Road shortly after 5 o’clock, when Mr. and Mrs. Waddell, with two other passengers. were returning from the Amberley races. When turning the corner, which is very sharp, tlie car ran across the road and struck the culvert at the other side. Mr. Waddell received a fractured skull and other injuries. Mrs. Waddell had an arm broken. The car was badly damaged, and part of the culvert was carried away. Mr. aud Mrs. Waddell were brought to Christchurch by ambulance. Mrs. Waddell’s condition was reported today to be fairly satisfactory. CYCLIST KILLED Struck by Lorry Travelling in Same Direction By Telegraph—Press Association. Christchurch, May 9. Struck by a half-ton lorry and thrown up on the hood, Christian'Albert Hadler, labourer, aged 56 years, was killed ou the main north road near Amberley on Saturday evening at about 6.30 o’clock. He was riding a bicycle between Glasueviu and Greene,v's Road toward Amberley, when a lorry, which was travelling in the same direction, struck him. throwing him up on the hood, his head striking tlie windscreen. He then rolled off tlie hood, being killed immediately. The police and Dr. I*. E. Starr, of Amberley, were summoned, and the body was taken to Amberley. The lorry was driven by Frank Richard Coo, farmer, of Amberley. An inquest was opened to-day before Mr. 11. A. Young, coroner, and was adjourned sine die after evidence of identification had been given by a brother, Herbert Horace Hadler.
