Hughes Cup Won By R. Braines PONEKE CLUB'S SEASON The opening race of the Poneke Amateur Cycling Club for the 1937 season was held on Saturday afternoon, starting from and linishng at the Central Fire .Station, .lervois Quay. Sixteen riders took part: iu the senior event for the Hughes Cup, a trophy presented by Mrs. O. Hughes for annual competition in the season’s opening race. The winner was R. Braines. and the runnerup N. Serirngeoiir. The holder of the cup, Roberts, was not a compettor, owing to his being transferred from Wellington. The race was over a 15-mile course. .1 F. Couper won the junior handicap, which was held over a course of eight miles. The place-tillers in the senior race and the first two in the junior event were all riding their first race. Addressing the competitors, Mr. 11. Abel, president of the club, expressed the hope that Wellington would have at least one cyclist at: the Empire Games, which were to be held in Sydney. He wished the club a most successful season. Detailed results were as follows: — Senior handicap: R. Braines (smin.), i: V. Evans (omin.l. 2; N. Scrimgeo'.ir (smin.). 3. Fastest times: R. Loader (scr.l, 37.15; R. Ulmer (scr.l, 37.22; R. Dutton (ser.), 38.45. Junior handicap: J. E. Couper (2miu.) 3
