RULES OF THE ROAD

Copy of Code to be Sent To Every Home SAFETY CAMPAIGN Guide for Motorists and Pedestrians "One of the major measures being taken by the Government in the interests of road safety is the distribution of a road code,” said the Minister of Transport. Hon. R. Semple, in an interview last evening. Supplies of booklets containing the code and a summary of the tratlie regulations, with illustrations of tratlie signs, will be dispatched within the next few days, to all local authorities which issue drivers’ licences. A second booklet, giving the full text of the tratlie and traffic signs regulations, and containing a detailed index, is also being similarly distributed. Local authorities have been specially requested to ensure that every person obtaining a renewal of his present licence, or a new licence, receives a copy of each booklet. Arrangements have also been made to send the road code booklet to each home in the country, so that pedestrians and cyclists, as well as motorists, may be able to inform themselves of their rights and their duties under the recently-amended legislation governing all classes of trallic. "I have felt that it is a duty falling on the Government to give everyone a full opportunity to become acquainted with the rules and regulations,” said the Minister. "A few minutes spent in reading the code will be time well spent by the driver, cyclist, or pedestrian who lias any regard for his or her own safety, and I earnestly hope th,at an every-day observance of the nils and a substantial decrease in accidents will follow. “After all, the matter is largely one for the good common sense of each individual. No doubt there will be a small section of people whose wilful carelessness or negligence will endanger life on the public streets and roads, Init public opinion and the courts will deal with such people.”
