Yesterday’s Business RETURN ON INVESTMENTS Sales recorded oir Dominion Stock Exchanges yesterday are shown in the following list. In the second column is given the return based on the last annual dividend from investment at the quoted price. Big River Gold Mines Big River Gold Mines Ltd. reports for the week ended April 13: —Started repairing the mine’s ore bins, some of the outposts being badly decayed. No. 5 level south drive advanced 13ft. to 135 ft. through reef track carrying mineralised seams of stone and leaving an average of 18 inches of stone overhead. Am now getting ready to riis'e for the south winze; tons of stone were delivered to the mine paddock. Oil Search in New Guinea Oil Search Ltd. reports that Mr. E. F. Griffin, managing director, and Mr. D. Dale Condit, the company’s chief geologist, have arrived in London on business of the company. A report by radio from the company'« senior geologist in Papua states that definite indications have been found of a large anticlinal area associated with oil seepages and oil-impregnated rocks and gas. Thorough geological examination of the subject area is being made. The company points out that caution should be exercised pending the receipt of further information. The Minister of the Interior has been advised of the development. Surveys are in progress to determine the best route of access to the structure to be drilled in the Mandated Territory, and a landing ground for aviation purposes near the drilling site is also being prepared. The recent issue of new shares closed ■with a total subscription of ISI.OOO shares. 58,925 of which were subweribed by Johannesburg interests. Placer Development Shares Placer Development. Ltd., reports that Greenshields and Company, Montreal, hare exercised their option on the 20,000 shares placed under offer to them in February, at 20 dollars per share net. The issued shares of the company now total 730,000, of 1 dollar each. Australian Price of Gold The price fixed by the Commonwealth Bank for gold, including jewellery, lodged at the Melbourne Mint for the week ended April 9, was at the rate of approximately £B/1/91 per ounce standard (22 carats), equal to a premium of 107.78 per cent. Payment is made according to the assay value of the gold. The price was 111. per ounce lower on the week. The price per ounce fine was £B/16/6 j, which was Id. lower on the week.
