The Dog Nuisance
Sir, —There are too many dogs—yelping morning, noon, and night, probably young dogs and hungry, underfed ! One started yelping at 6 o’clock this morning and kept it up till 6.40. Near one of our tram termini last week one of three boys riding bicycles was nearly thrown off his machine by a lot of noisy mongrels running round him and his companions, and barking furiously. A few minutes later while sitting in the tram I drew a fellow passenger’s attention to these dog nuisances. He replied, “Yes, that is so. About 2 o’clock this morning two dogs belonging to a neighbour of mine starred barking at one another and kept it up for an hour. If I had had a gun I do believe I would have shot them and risked the consequences.” We have a Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and excellent work that society is doing. What we need now is a Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Human Beings by Animals. —I am, etc., ONE OF THE SUFFERERS. Wellington, April 20.
