The Birthrate

Sir, —I read in your issue of April 19 a letter by “A Woman,” making the possibility of war an excuse for women not having children. If all British women took that attitude, how would they fare in, say, 20 years’ time, with practically no young men to defend their country? The nation that took our placeVwould not be burdened with elderly people of a defeated and decadent enemy.

Every creature, species and race on this planet has to fight for its existence; walk into a forest, how beautiful and peaceful it seems, yet _ every tree and plant is fighting to survive. Perhaps “A Woman” thinks that the British race of to-day is not worthy to occupy and populate the lands of our Empire. She may be right, but God forbid. —I am, etc., D. G. GREGORIE. Pahiatua, April 20.
