Telephone Operators’ Wages
Sir, —Perhaps some reader with more intelligence than I. possess would like to explain the following: — The Hon. R. Semple imide a public statement that the Public Works employees received- an average of £1 per day, and the Hon. F. Jones states in a public report that the P. and T. revenue was the highest for a decade. I understand that the profits from the tolls and telephone service are paid into the Consolidated Fund, which is used to pay the Public Works employees at the rate of £1 per day, yet the majority ot operators in the telephone exchanges in this country are married men jv™ lengthy service and they receive 13/10 net per day. If the telephone exchange operator receives 13/10 per day after 20 years’ service, and the navvy £1 for his day at work, what remuneration will the navvy receive after 20 years?—l am, etc., 1914 WAR MUG. Napier, April 16.
