BUTTER AND CHEESE FOR BRITAIN

Big Increase in Shipments NEW ZEALAND CHIEF SUPPLIER An increase of 6815 tons of butter and 3221 tons of cheese is shown in the exports of dairy produce for the eight months of the current season to March 31, as compared with those for the corresponding period of 1935-36. Shipments of butter during March totalled 14,475 tons, and shipments of cheese 9223 tons. Shipments of butter from Australia to the United Kingdom this season show a substantial decrease. For the eight months ended March 31 shipments totalled 51,450 tons, compared with 73,574 tons for the corresponding period of last season, a decrease of slightly over 30 per cent. The shipments of butter from Australia to Britain last month were only 6466 tons, compared with 11,050 tons for March, 1936. Shipments of cheese from Australia to the United Kingdom for the eight months were 4548 tons, compared with 4SS4 tons for the corresponding period of last season. The above figures are taken from the returns supplied to the Dairy Board by the Primary Products Marketing Department, which gives the following comparative statement of butter and cheese exports from New Zealand for the eight months ended March 31.— BUTTER. 1936-37. 1935-36.

The above tables show that shipments of butter to West Coast of Britain ports for the eight months totalled 30,182 tons, an increase of 9195 tons. Shipments of cheese to the same destinations totalled 13,796 tons, an increase of 2299 tons. The figures show that Great Britain is at present practically the only market for the Dominion’s butter and cheese exports to other countries being very small. Great Britain’s Imports. Imports of butter into Great Britain from all sources during the three months ended March 31, totalled 113,118 tons, compared with 112,759 tons for the corresponding quarter of last year. Of this year’s imports 68,717 tons were from Empire sources and 44,401 tons from foreign countries. New Zealand with 45,679 tons for the three months was easily the largest supplier, Denmark ranking second with 25,772 tons and Australia third with 20,2-13 tons. Imports from no other country reached 5000 tons for the three months, Holland being fourth with 4954 tons, and the xYrgentine Republic fifth with 3908 tons. Imports of cheese into Great Britain from all sources during the quarter ended March 31 totalled 34,621 tons, of which 30.573 tons came from Empire sources (New Zealand 27,802 tons) and 4048 tons from foreign countries.
