Titanic Disaster (From “The Dominion/’ April 17, 1912.).. The Titanic, which collided with. an iceberg in the North Atlantic, has sunk. There are 675 persons saved. The H hite Star officials believe that 1500 passengers have been drowned. The vessel cost £1,250,000. The hull and cargo were insured for £2,350,000. Veteran Atlantic travellers have not before seen the ice so far south or in such great bulk as now. The company’s New York offices are besieged by the relatives of wealthy Americans who were on board. The absence of news has caused excitement approaching a panic. * * * The Chief Justice of Victoria (Sir John Madden), in delivering judgment in a case in which fingerprint evidence was prominent, declared that fingerprints alone were not sufficient evidence to warrant a conviction.
