Frosty Morning. Brr! Isn’t it cold? At least, it's winter here! Nippy old Jack Frost must be going his “rounds.” This morning I just couldn’t leap out of bed, for the air was freezing, so I grunted, turned over, and snatched another snooze, ’till it was time to get up. Then I poked my toe out of the blankets, and slid out inch by inch, dressing at a furious pace. John has just galloped in to say there’s snow on the mountains, so no wonder it’s so cold !—New Zealand' Lass (15), Waipawa. Bush Fun. Every -year when flowers are out of season we go to the bush beyond our farm to pick green leaves for the vases. One day my sister, a friend, and I had some fun. We saw an old tawhera tree in which my brother had built a “fort” of branches, leaves and grass. Steps had been made to reach this, for it was built at almost the top of the high tree. When climbing it one had to keep one’s head down to keep one’s eyes free from dust. Another day we went there for a party, and when we finished he climbed another tree. When Joan was coming down, however, and before she reached a branch from where she intended to jump, she saw a large black spider in a hole, and being afraid of spiders she gave a squeal, and we had to help her down in a hurry. Later, my sister sat on a quite unsafe-looking branch—we heard a crack, and there she was sitting on the ground with the branch still under her!—Goldfinch (11), Levin.
