KILLED A “GHOST”
Joke Ends in Death Because he killed a’ “ghost,” Ivan Hajduk, a peasant of the Jugoslav village of Lyubiski, had to serve two weeks in prison. After a night in the village inn, Ivan bet his friends that he would visit the local cemetery at the ghostly hour of midnight and bring back a wreath to prove he had been there. When wandering in the graveyard, Ivan was terrified by a white-clad apparition which appeared from behind a tombstone. Ivan drew his revolver and shot the “ghost,” which dropped shouting. "Mother, help!” The ghost proved to be a friend of Ivan’s who thought be would play a joke on his superstitious friend. He was so badly wounded that he died the same night. The court held that Ivan was not responsible for his friend’s death, but sentenced him for violating the peace of the cemetery.
