OPENING OF W.E.A. SESSION

The winter session of tho Workers' Educational Association will begin this evening with a lecture-recital on “The Romantic Composers,” in Nimmo’s Hall, at 8 o’clock, by Madame Betts-Vincent. This is the first of four lecture-recitals on modern music to be given on Saturday evenings, and there will be numerous vocal and pianoforte illustrations from the works of leading German, Russian, French and British composers. Next Tuesday Professor J. Shelley will give the first of a series of four lectures on “Art and Life,” in the lecture hall at the Dominion Museum, Buckle Street, at 8 p.m. His subject will be “The Origins of Art." Some line lantern slides will be shown, and the course is open to all lovers of art, Tutorial classes will begin at the Trades Hall, Vivian Street, on Monday at 7.45 p.m., when Mr. R. J. Lockhart, M.A., will begin a course of 10 lectures on “Man and His Environment." These lectures will lie illustrated, and will show man’s relation to the flora and fauna of the world around him. On Thursdays at the same hour and place Mr. W. J, Scott, M.A., will conduct a class in modern literature, and will deal with many of the leading British writers of to-day. Other interesting short courses and tutorial classes will follow, and will be announced later. A discussion group to study the “Problems of Human Nature” will meet fortnightly in the Karori West School on Thursday evenings under the leadership of Mr. 11. W. Watson, M.A. Other discussion groups will be formed in the outer suburbs as required under the direction of Mr. I. D. Campbell. LL.M. A tutorial class for the study of modern drama will meet each Monday evening in the Methodist Schoolroom at Ngaio at 7.45 p.m. Miss C. Keddell, F.T.C.L., will be the tutor, and a playrending circle will also be formed under her guidance. Two attractive courses have been arranged for Lower Hutt. On Wednesday Mr. J. Comes, B.Sc. will give the first of four film talks on “Old Trades and New Knowledge” in the Borough Council Chamber, High Street, at 7.45 p.m., and his pictures will show the historical development _ of mining. The succeeding films will depict the work of “The Smith,” “The Potter,” and “The Weaver,” and at the conclusion of this course Dr. A. G. Butchers will conduct a class for the study of “The Psychology of Personal Conduct.” His lectures will begin on Wednesday, May 12, Discussion hour at the close of the lectures is a specoial feature of W.E.A. classes, and an extensive library of books is available to all members. A nominal fee wil] be charged for each course.
