Record Sales Last Year HIGHER COSTS LIFT PRICES Record sales of both milk anil cream were made last year by tiie city milk department, and n profit of £5341 was realised. This information was given to the Wellington City Council last night by Cr. L. .McKenzie, chairman of the milk committee. He said that, the profit represented 1-Sd. a quart. Sales to dairies and milk bars accounted for tiie 'large increase of 26 pe'r cent, in bulk milk sales. Working expenses bad increased as a result of tlie legislation, ami were £.16,000, or 19 per cent, above the expenses of the previous year. The department's reserves were in a strong position, ami it was in a healthy position generally. ' The general manager of (lie. department, .Mr. R. E. Herrtfii. in his annual report, said: “Arising out of the Government's guaranteed prices for butter and cheese, and tiie new labour legislation as it affects the producers, the Imying price of milk as from August 1 last has been substantially increased. "Also because of the Government’s labour legislation wage costs and costs, of stores ami services have been substantially increased. “The increased costs are reflected in higher selling prices of milk as compared with tiie previous year,” said Mr. Herron. "The new selling prices amount to an increase of rather more than one halfpenny per quart on tile average.”
