AERIAL SURVEY MADE
Prospective Sites For Defence Aerodrome
MANAWATU PROJECT
Dominion Special Service. Palmerston North, April i. Further steps toward forming a large defence aerodrome in Mauawatu County on one of two areas described in “The Dominion” recently have taken place with tlie carrying out yesterday of an aerial survey mid photographing of the sites. This follows some weeks' ground work by surveyors. The first area, at Carnarvon, is of over 200 acres with almost unlimited room for extension. The second is at Ohakea. two miles north of Sanson, where there are 600 acres. Overseas Hying interests which considered establishing an aerodrome in the Manawatu some years ago decided on this latter site. Both are on the main AucklandWellington highway, the Carnarvon site a few miles on the Foxton side of Sanson ; tlie other on the Bulls side. Whichever is chosen large scale development in both land and buildings is probable.
FALSE ALARMS COST PALMERSTON £l3O
Annual Fire Figures
Palmerston North, April .1
On figures worked out for a city station it costs tlie Palmerston North Fire Board £5 every time the brigade lias to turn out for a false alarm. There were 26 of these for the year ended yesterday, 19 of them malicious, representing an approximate ture of £l3O, of which the £95 for the 19 malicious alarms was caused by wanton action on tlie part of persons unknown. Taken over a period of years the expense of answering false alarms is a considerable addition to tire-fighting costs. There were 28 actual property fires in Palmerston North for the year ended yesterday. There were 114 calls, a decrease of eight on tlie same period last year. The details are:—Actual fires 28. false alarms 26 (malicious 19), chimney fires 31, hedge or grass fires 12, motor-car or motor-cycle outbreaks B,.’burning fat in ovens 2, rubbish fires 2, fires out of bounds 5. GARAGES ROBBED Windscreen-wiper and Batteries Stolen Palmerston North, April 1. Four batteries aud a windscreenwiper were removed from cars in unlocked garages in Palmerston North last night. The theft of a windscreenwiper is interesting in view of the scarcity of these in Wellington. Palmerston North, Hastings, and Napiei, since their possession was made necessary to secure the certificate of fitness required by law after March 31.

INTE R ESTIN G MUSE UM EXHIBIT Life of New Caledonian Natives Napier, April 1. An interesting exhibit which is on loan from the Dunedin Museum is to be seen at the present time at the Hawke’s Bay Museum at Napier. Designed to illustrate the life of the New Caledonian natives, it consists of an illustrated display of their weapons, tools and articles of personal adornment. Several coloured drawings by members of the museum staff gave a good idea of the use of the articles. One interesting feature is the use of mephrlte or greenstone, which apparently abounds in New. tailed onia,.
