Two Youths Convicted
Dominion Special Service. Hastings, April 1. “Accused said that he acted upon a sudden impulse,” said DetectiveSergeant Revell at Ibe Magistrate’s Court at. Hastings this morning, when Roy Burgess, aged 18 years, pleaded guilty to a charge of stealing a stopwatch and other articles to a value of £7/9/9, the property of James Clements. Tito detective-sergeant said that accused had no explanation to give as to the reason for taking the goods. He had travelled from Feilding to Hastings on a horse-float in Clements’s company and on arrival at Hastings the articles mentioned were missing. “A prominent citizen has offered hint a job if be is given a chance,” added (lie detective-sergeant, and as this is his first: appearance in court. I suggest that he bo convicted and ordered to come up tor sentence if called upon within 12 months.” Messrs. F. C. Runeiman and A. U. A. Hyde, J.P.'s, adopted the suggestion. A plea of guilty on a charge of stealing a mattress, blankets and two Rarotongan mats was also entered by another 18-year-old youth, a Maori named Reginald Tawern. The goods, which had been taken by the when leaving To Ante College bad been recovered. The bench was inclined to take a lenient view, convicting accused and ordering him to come up for sentence if called upon within 12 months..
