EASTER ROAD TRAFFIC
Heavy, But Well-behaved
Very heavy but well-behaved road traffic during the Easter holidays is reported by the Automobile Association (Wellington). A pleasing feature is the absence of serious accidents in the Wellington district. Traffic during the last few days was probably heavier than at any time during the Christinas holidays. It is known that in the Hawke's Bay district the volume of traffic was almost twice as heavy as it was during the Christinas period. Reports indicate that on the whole drivers behaved themselves very well. Two points mentioned by A.A. patrol officers are (1) the badly-adjusted headlights which, in the concentrated traffic over a short period on Thursday night, were particularly noticeable, and (2) the tendency of a large number of drivers to bear over on to the white line on corners.
The Automobile Association again emphasises that the white liue is not put down to drive on. It is painted as a warning on a dangerous bend, and Immediately a driver sees it he should take his guide from the outside of the road and drive as far away from the white line as he can instead of on it.
The wet weather experienced on the West Coast on Monday was responsible for sending home a large number of holiday-makers early in the day, and to a certain extent this relieved congestion during the worst driving period—after dark. From Levin southward there was a continuous stream of traffic tin to about 4 p.m., but after that n limited number of vehicles on the road, which made travelling conditions at night much easier.
