DEBHAM WINS

Easter Handicap at Tauherenikau

PENNYCOMEQUICK IN FORM Substantial Betting Increase (By The Watcher.) The Wairarapa Racing Club Was both lucky and unlucky with the opening of its autumn meeting at Tauherenikau on Saturday; lucky iu that a fine morning set everybody en route to the track, a large crowd attending, and unlucky in that rain marred their enjoyment of racing to some extent. However, the rain was mainly of the misty kind, and there was no heavy downpour, and the large crowd enabled a substantial increase to be shown in the totalisator investments. Racing was keen and interesting - ) the fields and the contests being about the best that have been seen at Tauherenikau for many years. Debham won the Easter Handicap in decisive fashion. He was an uncertain starter until scratchings released a suitable horseman, but as it turned out the issue was hardly ever in doubt. The other open event was won by Pennycomequick. Form was inclined to be a little tricky, but the only substantial surprise was brought, off by Prince Mulla in the opening event. The rain made the track very greasy, and the going at times was treacherous. It brought down Helen Ford in the Easter Handicap, and Werohia fell over her. There were no casualties, and an Inquiry revealed the incident to have been accidental.

The starter, Mr. M. Crimmins, made his debut at Tauherenikau. and he did good -work, displaying patience and a quick appreciation of the moment to pull the lever. Betting was brisk, and the day’s turnover iras £ 19,258/10/-, an increase of £7712/10/- on Easter Saturday last year. The club has spent a considerable sum of money on the installation of a permanent race-broadcast, system on the lines of that at Trentham, and on Saturday it appeared to meet with satisfaction. Favourite Unlucky. Royal Portrait endeavoured an all-the-way win in the maiden, and he was still in charge half-way up the straight. Here Prince Mulla, who had always been handy in behind on the rails, came along with a strong challenge and wore down the pacemaker. Good Sun finished very fast into third place after getting into the ruck early, and then came Gold Nymph, while Haupangi headed the bunch. Gay Artist was never sighted. The winner, who paid a substantial price, is a half-brother by Mullaboden to Myriam. and he won well. He has done very little racing. Good Sun was finishing very fast once he got clear, but it was too late. He was unlucky. Haupangi and Galteemore showed early pace, but did not run ou. Tupai's gear came adrift, and he was pulled up. Winner Gets the Luck. Hunting Mars “fluked” a move-in etajt in the open sprint, and after leading early dropped in behind Deficit and Flammarion. Deficit retired at the straight entrance, where Acceptable and Davina were also showing up. Flammarion still had charge short of the post, but Hunting Mars came on again to win very handily at the finish. There was not much between Flammarion and Acceptable for second, and Lavina headed the others, who were well strung out, Deficit finishing last. The winner’s advantage at the start stood to him in his finishing run. Flammarion and Lavina ran well to form, and Acceptable improved. Debham Decisively.

In a fairly slowly run early race for the Easter Handicap, and a sprint home, Debham won practically all the way. Big Dook and Lowenberg tailed the field out of the straight but, with the slow pace on, both rushed up into second and third places behind Debham at the six furlongs. Pukeko, Rona Bay and Bantry being most prominent of the others. Debham sprinted away with a clear lead at the three furlongs, and was never caught. Pukeko put up a good fight in the run home, but he had no chance with Debham. though he was well clear of Big Dook. Rona Bay was fourth, followed by Hazoor, Lowenberg and Bantry. Werohia and Helen Ford fell, about the six furlong post. . Debham won well, and experienced no difficulty in running out the distance. Pukeko ran right to form. Big Doolt was chopped out at the start. He ran well, but was not good enough, and Lowenberg also had every chance. A Narrow Win. Accomplice and Son and Heir began best in the two-year-old race, and they had the running to themselves. Son and Heir joined Accomplice at the three furlongs. and from that on they had a good tussle. The colt just won in an extremely close finish. Parinui was a poor third, with Girl Pat next.

Son and Heir was the form horse. Accomplice improved and appeared to hold the winner just short of the post but he just wore her down. Win for Taranaki. Captain Tudor scored a decisive win in the hack mile. He lay in behind the leading trio, Skyway, Gay Hunter and Earl Colossus, to the straight, and then moved forward to have the race won well off the post. Gay Hunter hung on for second but Lord Quick look third from the tiring Earl Colossus. The winner won in bis best style, and his lameness does not appear serious. Gay Hunter was asked a big question

under 9.9, and he performed with credit. Lord Quick was finishing on.

A Paralysing Run. Alunga ‘'flew’’ at the finish to win the Newmarket Hack from Gironde after the latter had headed off the pacemaker, Mister Quex, and was looking a certainty. There was not much in it at the finish but Alunga’s win was very decisive. Patagonia did best of the beaten lot, Sunny Blonde never being prominent. Alunga is on the improve. His finishing run from an apparently hopeless position was paralysing. Favourite’s Bad Race. Sansfoy ran a bad race in the Martinborough Handicap, finishing a bad last, and being beaten a long way from home. Boomerang endeavoured to lead all the way and was still there at the straight entrance. Here Pennycomequick drew to the front and, stalling off a strong challenge by Master Cyklon, just won. Darecourt was a poor third with Boomerang next. Master Cyklon appeared a trifle unlucky as he lost a good position in the running. Won All the Way. First Chapter hopped out smartly in the concluding event, and led all the way. The favourite. Nelumbo, joined him early and went with him to the straight, where Nelumbo lost ground through running wide. First Chapter then ran on for a win over the rank outsider Dorado, who moved past most of the others in the straight. There was nothing in it for third between Rustem, Nelumbo and Collodion. but Rustem was not placed. Eagle’s Eye was not good enough and Diamond Cutter never showed up.. , First Chapter was the third Hunting Song to win on the day. (Nelumbo was unlucky to lose ground by running out.
