SEATS RETAINED BY CONSERVATIVES
Two British By-elections London, March 24. The Tonbridge by-election, necessitated by the death of Lieut.-Colonel H. H. Spender-Clay (Conservative), resulted :— Sir Adrian Baillie (Conservative) 18,802 Mr. Harold Smith (Labour) ... 8,147 Mr. R. B. Matthews (Liberal) 6,073 Conservative majority .... 10,655 The Farnham by-election, caused by Sir Arthur Samuel’s elevation to the peerage, resulted: — Mr. Godfrey Nicholson (Conservative) 20,580 Mr. Peter Pain (Labour) 7,792 Mr. Linton Thorp (IndependentConservative) 2,327 Mr. Edward Miller (Independent) 1'54 Conservative majority .... 12,788 The two Independents forfeited their deposits. Lieut.-Colonel Spender-Clay retained the Tonbridge seat at the 1935 General Election by 23,460 votes, against 9405 secured by Mr. F. M. Landau (Labour), and 5403 by Major-General L. H. R. Pope-Hennessy (Liberal). In a straight-out contest in Farnham in 1935, Sir Arthur Samuel polled 28,211 votes, and his Labour opponent, Mr. D. M. Fraser 7725.
