DISTRICT JOTTINGS

Eastbourne Plunket Society A LIVE ORGANISATION / That residents of the eastern bays are genuinely interested in the Plunket work is illustrated year after year by the way they nut their hands in their pockets to further the cause. Unquestionably one qf the most live and most efficiently managed organisations in that district is the Eastbourne branch of the Plunket Society. With a keen, hard-working band of women at the helm of affairs, backed by the generosity of- the residents generally, they have built up a record of which thev might well be proud. Each year thev set out with a sum of £6O to raise as their contribution to headquarters, but it is more of a rule than an exception for them to double that amount. While the final figures are not yet available, the £l2O mark is already assured. What is more, there is no incessant request for help. The society’s activities are very largely confined to two efforts each year, the main function being the annual ball. Coronation Ball? Efforts are being made n the Hutt Valley to arrange a ball on an elaborate scale as part of the valley’s contribution toward the coronation celebrations. Preliminary arrangements are already in train, and will be further discussed at a public meeting, which has been convened for the purpose of furthering the scheme. Proposed Boxing Match. ' Negotiations are being carried out by the Hutt Valley Boxing Association to arrange for a professional contest at Perone on April 26. The contestants have not so far been decided on, but it is probable that the final matching will be the two Wellington boys, Stan Smith and Glengarry. Smith has some Australian experience behind him, while Glengarry, who figured prominently as an amateur, has iust entered the professional ranks, and has not yet had a match. Both are fast, attractive boxers.

Top-dressing Playing Area, Now that the cricket season has ended, workmen are busy top-dressing the Hutt recreation ground. The work is being pushed forward expeditiously so as to have the grounds rt*;l for winter sports at an early date. Four men were engaged on the work yesterday. The playing wickets have already been topdressed, and efforts are now-being directed toward other parts of the area requiring attention.

Easter Bowling* Tournament. Twenty-two rinks have been entered for the Hutt Valley inter-club bowling tournament for the McArthur Shield, to be played on Good Friday, Easter Saturday and Easter Monday. The tournament is confined to rinks from the four clubs in the Hutt Valley sub-centre’S area. Sectional play will be decided on the various club greens on Friday and Saturday, and the post-sectional matches will be played on the Petone club’s greens on the Monday. Judging by the rinks entered, keen competition throughout is expected.
