CARRIAGE OF “BOBBY” CALVES
S.P.C.A. Meeting Remits Several remits from various societies relating to the conveyance of "bobby” calves from farm to works were approved by yesterday's- annual meeting at AVellington of the Federated Societies for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. The remits are tn be forwarded to the Minister of Agriculture, Hon. AV. Lee Martin, with a request to enact appropriate legislation. The remits were as follows:— "That a blocking system of collecting calves be adopted in every district.” "That all calves bear the owner's identification mark,” 'That calves be sent to the nearest works for slaughter.’’ “That the use of iron railway trucks- be prohibited.'’ “That motor-trucks used for the conveyance of calves be fitted up to the satisfaction of the transport officer after consultation with representatives of the Department of Agriculture and the S.P.C.A.; all licensed trucks to have written on them the maximum number of calves allowed to be carried, and to be fitted with subdivisions to hold no more than 10 calves each.”
"'That il be compulsory upon the consignor to provide “,T” railway wagons with tarpaulins to protect the calves from the weather, and that at least 21 sq. ft. of space be allowed for each calf in railway and road wagons."’ ‘That the use of two-decked road wagons he prohibited unless the upper deck is impervious to rain and drainage, and that, road wagons also be prohibited unless provided with an adequate roof.’’ “That it be compulsory to provide road wagons with gratings with a mesh no larger than those user] for sheep in railway wagons." Other Remits. Other remits passed were as follows:— “That the Government be asked to pass a Humane Slaughtering Bill on the lines of the English Act. but to include sheep/’ "That strong objection be taken to the slaughter of pigs by the ‘wheel' system, ns now in operation, and that no animal shall be attached to a revolving wheel unless previously by stunning it be rendered instantaneously insensible to pain until death supervenes, such stunning to be ef. feeted by a mechanically operated instrument in proper repair."
“That all voluntary subscriptions received by the federation be subsidised £1 for £1 by the Government.’’ "That right of entry be given to authorised representatives of the S.P.C.A. ~o medical laboratories with a view to inspecting the methods of vivisection." “That it be made compulsory for the consignor to send a drover with stock in transit, on the railway if the journey by ordinary timetable exceeds 10 hours.”
