CHAMPIONSHIP BOWLS

Wellington Centre Rinks Event PLAY STOPS IN DARK In conditions that were practically perfect the first three rounds of the Wellington Bowling Centre’s champion of champions rinks tournament were played at ihe Thorndon green yesterday. Newtown will play Seatoun tn one ot the semi-finals to-day. The other senntinalists will be Island Bay and either Wellington or Khandallah. Play in the third round between these two teams ceased in almost complete darkness at 7.15 p.m., with one head yet to lie played. The game will be finished before the semi-finals commence on the same green at 9.30 a.m. to-day. The final will begin at 2 p.m. • The commencement of the \\ ellingtonKhandallah game was delayed by a rink not being available. In spite of the gathering darkness the play wits excellent, accurate drawing and driving arousing the enthusiasm of the spectators. Wellington were four up when one head reniaint;d to be played. The lead had difficulty in seeing the jack when it had been thrown the last time and was bcinjx straightened, and the plavers hail to pick up the bowls and peer at the discs to recognise their own. Khandallah lay shot when Ross, the Wellington skip, changed the head to two up for his side. Lock, the Khandallah skip, then killed the head. Wellington thus remained four up with one head to go, but play was then stopped. One of the best games of the day was the meeting of Wellington and Victoria in the first round. Victoria had nine on the board before Wellington scored on the fifth head. Wellington was five down with two heads to go. They secured a tic on the 21st head, however, and, getting in one counter on the extra head, won the game. Upper Hutt owed its defeat of Woburn to a five on the lota head. It put Woburn four down and tlmy never recovered. . Wellington made short work of Hataitai in the second round. The game ended on the 20th head, 28-15, the . winners scores including a five and a six toward the end of the game. Eastbourne made a good recovery from seven down on the 17th end to bent Karori, 23-21. The Thorndon rink which Khandallah defeated, 32-13. on the 20th head was not entirely the same team which won the club championship.
