Opening Day at Te Marua
Ideal surroundings, with delightful weather, made the opening day of The Marua last Saturday oue of the . most successful yet held. Extensive alterations which have been carried out during the summer months, and the conversion of the course to nine boles (5456 yards, scratch score 74 for the 18 holes), made the play very much more interesting, and visitors commented favourably on the well-mown fairways and excellent greens, A Canadian foursome, resulting in a win for Mrs. Findlay and Mr. Anderson, was played during the afternoon, and later afternoon tea was served at the home of Mr. and Mrs. W. E. A. Gill, overlooking the links. A putting competition was won by K. Lackey. At the conclusion of the day the past season’s trophies were presented by the wife of the club captain, Mr. R. E. Pope, who extended a hearty welcome to all visitors. The following were the winners of the major tournaments held during the pijst year:—Championships, Mrs. IL E. Pope, K. E. Leighton; Frank Petre cups, Mrs. K. A. Lackey, G. S. Austad; Harris Cup, Miss S. Pau! and ,L F. Paul; Hoddinott Cup, Miss S. Paid and .1. F. Paul. Among the visitors present were Mesdames Ancell. Wheeler, Pryde, Bates, Johnson. Bowen. Maudsley. Richmond. Siinm. Findlay and K. Mason Misses Cooper, Porteous, Kisscll, Bourke, Smith. Tarlor. Wright, and Messrs. Ancell. Worth' Ward. Grieve. K. Mason. 11. Mason, Warner, O'Connell. S. Paul. Richmond. Sandham. G. O. Sutton, ami Major Kirk.
