WHEAT SHORTAGE
Shipment From Australia
Dominion Special Service. Auckland, March 12.
On account of a shortage of wheat iu the South Island, the Wheat Committee has arranged for a shipment of Australian milling wheat to arrive by the Kekerangu ou Tuesday. About 1090 tons is being shipped, and will be distributed for poultry food. The price has been fixed at 6/7 a bushel for a minimuin quantity of 10 sacks, if taken delivery of at the ship’s side, payment being cash before, delivery.
Proportionately higher prices have been fixed f.o.r. or f.0.b., and through the store. For smaller quantities the present price in Auckland is 6/10 a bushel through the store. The wheat is expected to meet with a ready sale as there has been a fairly acute shortage on the market for some weeks and merchants have/been relying on old season’s fowl Wheat. Continued broken weather i the South Island has interfered with harvesting, and as most of the wheat is of milling grade, suggestions were recently made, that merchants would be forced to ration supplies until the new season's crop is available about the beginning of next Jiwnth.
