WELLINGTON RATES

Final Rush to Avoid Penalty This week has been a busy one in the Wellington city rates oflice. As a penalty of 10 per cent, goes on all unpaid rates after Monday next, propertyowners have been hurrying to get in just before the closure. As the rates office will be closed this morning for the usual Saturday holiday, no rates can be paid direct over the counter today, but this docs not prevent people who owe rates writing their cheques for the amount and posting them in time for payment ou Monday. During the past week the mails for the rates office have been particularly heavy, and there is likely to lie a swollen mail bag on Monday. The following tables shows how the rates money has been coming in this week:— £ Monday 5.859 'Tuesday 12,641 Wednesday 6.217 Thursday 11,953 Friday (about) .. 12,000 Approx, total .... £61,471 Cheques for rates posted on Monday will be free of penalty.
