GALLOPS AT HAWERA

, Candidates For Opunake

Dominion Special Service.

Hawera, February 25.

Local horses engaged at Opunake were given their final gallops on the Hawera tracks this morning. Fast work was performed on the course proper, which was heavy after recent rain.

Friesland and Lowenberg were again companions over five furlongs, run in 1.7. Both horses worked with their usual dash. Kia Ora ran two furlongs down the back in 26. This disappointing filly should perform creditably in Saturday’s maiden.

King Pluto jumped two hurdles well, later running five furlongs in 1.9 J. Autumn Leaf and Naughty Marietta finished together a couple of lengths ahead of Corowa over six furlongs in 1.20 4-5. Autumn Leaf worked well, and her Opunake prospects appear bright. Corowa could not handle the going. Opunake riding engagements announced include:—C, Cole, Corowa (twice), Gaily, Autumn Leaf and Dancing Lady; B. H. Morris, Ned Cuttle and Kia Ora; S. Hawkes, Valroy, Running Siloes and ■St. (>dric; G. Tattersail, Fafner; A. Jenkins, Gay Step; L. Monkley, Lickem; W. Griudlay, King Pluto; K. Chote, Naughty Marietta (twice).
