TELEVISION SYSTEM

Result of Standardisation

London, February 5.

The standardisation of the television system means that there will be no further transmissions under the Baird system from Alexandra Palace and that the Marconi-E.M.I. system alone will be employed. Mr. Baird told the “News Chronicle” that his experiments are not affected by the decision, which has been taken in the interests of economy.

Baird shares have fallen and E.M.I. shares have risen sharply. In a statement, Baird Television, Ltd., gave an assurance that the decision does not mean the setting up of a monopolistic situation. It cannot be too strongly emphasised that the adoption of a single standard does not mean the adoption of a particular system. The decision in no wise diminishes the commercial prospects or limits the trading policy of the company, which is also continuing work in large-screen cinema television and military and other non-entertainment aspects.

A British official wireless message published on Saturday stated that as a result of experience gained in television transmission, the Television Advisory Committee had recommended that a set of technical standards should he adopted for public transmissions from the London station. This recommendation has beeu approved by the Postmaster-Genei‘al. It provides the adoption of the following standards: Number of linos per picture, 405 interlaced: number of frames per second. 50; ratio of synchronisation impulse to picture, 30 to 70. These standards will not be substantially tested before the end of 1938. All future transmissions will be known as London television standards.
