ORATORY’S DEFEAT

Taranaki Stakes to Cheval de Volee

NEW PLYMOUTH MEETING

Paul Memorial Won By Chief Ranger

By Telegraph—From The Watcheb.

New Plymouth, February 6. The Taranaki Jockey Club's, autumn meeting concluded to-day in fine warm weather and in the presence of a large attendance, both the totalisator and gate returns showing a satisfactory increase. The principal handicap, the Paul Memorial, was won by Chief Ranger, and the Taranaki Stakes was marked by the failure of Oratory to stall off defeat by the moderately performed . hack Cheval de Volee. The other open race was won by Friesland. The track was again fast, and near record time was established in the Paul Memorial. The totalisator figures for the day were £19,496, compared with £13,163 10/- on the second day last year, an increase of £6332/10/-. The total for the meeting was £34,454/10/-, compared with £23,186/10/-, an increase of £11,268. First Win Over Fences.

Royal Routine scored his first win over hurdles by beating the first day’s winner fairly decisively. It was an improved performance, but he still ran about a bit at hie fences. In addition he was allowed all his own rules out in front, and by going easily throughout, with a smart sprint over the concluding stages, he was able to hold off Don Erma’s challenge. Easy for Favourite. Flying Chief (late King Koroki) was justifiably a warm favourite for the Awakino Hack, and he won easily. Flying Chief was always in front and ran with Kentucky Song to the straight from Glenthawn and Royal Erie. Once in line Glenthawn looked a possibility, but Flying Chief, kicked up, drew out in win very easily, Glenthawn having finally to do his best to. head Kentucky Song for second. Royal Fire was fourth, with the rest well back. The winner, a three-year-old Chief Ruler gelding, shapes like a useful horse. He was much too good for this field. A Wonderful Finish. The Mokau Hack provided a thrilling finish, the whole field being bunched for the run homeland Corowa just winning from the favourites, Le Grand and International. Corowa and Le Grand were -well placed in behind the leaders, Earl Colossus, Convivia! and Red Sand, but Corowa drifted a little on the approach to the home turn, where Student Prince ran up handy. Corowa, however, came on again approaching the straight, and, finishing very resolutely, he won by a head from Le Grand, who also finished strongly once he got through on the rails. International, who had been last in the early running, cut out Red Sand for third, with Convivial, Student Prince, Missal and Earl Colossus all well up Corowa struck a patch of trouble on the first day, and his recent form has been very consistent. It is 'probable, however, that Le Grand would have won in another stride or two, and it looked certain he would liave won on a more roomy track. Practically every horse in the field ran a good race, ami it was one of the keenest-contested events seen for a long time. International - finished very well. Oratory’s Poor Finish. Oratory staged a complete fall from grace by her defeat in the Taranaki Stakes, beaten, too, by a horse that was in the race only to make up a field of three. Oratory had every chanee. She began a, trifle better than Greenwich, but the latter ran through to the front on the rails, and had Oratory on her girths till nearing the straight, with Cheval de Volee three or four lengths away. Oratory took the lead off Greenwich without apparent effort, but she was no sooner in front than in trouble, and although B. H. Morris was obviously anxious before Cheval de Volee got within range. Oratory did not respond, and finally weakened badly to give Cheval de Volee a narrow, but decisive win. Greenwich was a poor third. The winner’s owner was well rewarded for his generosity in starting his horse in preference to the hack race, but his success can be over-rated, as Oratorv is not anywhere near her right form. Mainly due to the restricted betting on the event, the winner’s price was comparatively poor for such a win. Chief Ranger Improves. Chief Ranger improved by his race the first day, and also appreciating the shorter journey, won fairly decisively in the Paul. Memorial from Taitoru, staging a stronger finish.than the latter, who had taken the lead off the pacemaker, Tout le Monde, before reaching the straight. One Whetu was always prominent, being better placed than the winner in the running, but he did not come home so well, and just beat Spiral for third, with Davistoek and Hazoor next.

It was a consistent form result, with the exception of Hazoor, who received a bad check aboht the five furlongs.

Won All the Way.

The Paritutu Juvenile was a good thing for the topweight, Orate, who quickly ran to the front, and won. all the way from

Eagle’s Eye. Wildflower was slow to find her feet, but ran on for third money at the finish, with Ripple heading the ruck.

The winner has a lot of early pace aud in his class is a useful horse. Friesland's Solid Win. Friesland lost a bit of ground at the start of the Urenui Handicap, but he had bridged the gap at the end of three furlongs, and waiting on the field for his final run, came through to beat Supreme Court .very decisively at the finish. Supreme Court had taken the lead off Refresher on the turn, aud was clear into the straight, but Friesland overwhelmed him. Grateful had every chance, but was only a moderate third, with Mustang well up fourth. Friesland was too good for his opponents, but Grateful was a better backed runner. Sansfoy Again. Export, Imposture, Autumn Leaf, and Rustem were prominent in the running in the Ornata Hack Handicap, and Sansfoy lay behind them on the rails. Just before reaching the straight Sansfoy pushed through an opening and came round the turn with a slight advantage from Export. Drawing away slightly in the run home Sansfoy won by half a length from Export, who beat Rustem by two lengths. Calshot was fourth, and Autumn Leaf fifth. Sansfoy paid a good price on the win machine considering that he had been successful on the first day. Results in Detail OKOKE HURDLES HANDICAP, of £130; second £2O. third £lO.
