DAVOLO SURPRISES

Canterbury’s Summer Meeting MIDSUMMER HANDICAP Concertpitch in Tussle in Craven Plate Dominion Special Service. Christchurch, February 6. The summer meeting of the Canterbury Jockey Club was held to-day. Die weather was fine and the attendance good. The course was in fast order. Totalisator investments were £20,320/10/-, compared with £10,522/10/- last year. Hunting Bag’s Fast Pace. Polydora was sent out a strong favourite for the Hornby Brush Hurdle race, but was well beaten by Hunting Bag. who was having his first race over hurdles, and was in the van throughout. _ noyal Amphora joined Hunting Bag with halt the journey covered, and the pair had a substantial lead rounding the far turn from Polydora, with another gap to Golden Lap. Polydora gradually drew up to the leading pair turning into the straight, and was two lengths away from them at the last fence. Hunting Bag shook off Royal Amphora and. carrying on, had no trouble in holding off Polydora, who was hard ridden over the last two furlongs but could not make any impression. Royal Amphora, also having his first race over battens, was a good third, two lengths in front of Santoft, with Golden Lap and Bright Red tailed off. Hunting Bag created a big impression, both by the fast pace he set and by a clean display throughout. There was no excuse for Polydora, and it was not the fault of her rider that she was not closer at the finish, as. he was at her for the last six furlongs. She seemed likely to gather in the leaders rounding the home turn, but after getting within easy reach of them she failed to continue her effort. Royal Amphorn made a very creditable showing, especially in having to keep pace with the winner for over half the journey. Santoft was always well back, while Golden Lap spoilt any chance he had by a bad jump at the third fence. Bright Red showed prominence for six furlongs, but then retired to the rear. A Big Dividend.

A field of 19 paraded for the Trial Stakes, and half of those were bunched turning on to the course proper, but Rebel Mate and Made Money sorted themselves out at the distance, and fought out a sustained finish, the former staying on the better to gain a narrow verdict. Primak, who was one of the leading division. was a good third, two lengths in front of Dictate, witli Nightbound, Gresham, Boro Iliko, and Robant at the head of the remainder.

Made Money, who is a seven-year-old, has raced only a few times, and this was his first appearance this season. He is a big gelding, aud carries the same colours as Kamal Pasha. Rebel Mate justified hi_s position as favourite by a solid effort. Primak, by Acre, impressed in his first appearance in the south, while Dictate did well in the face of drawing an outside marble. Nightbound and Gresham ran disappointing races. Middle Park Plate. Royal Chief was made a much better favourite than the Paper Slipper-Mob Rule bracket, but suffered a decisive defeat by Paper Slipper, and only just scraped home for second money. Lazybones, Royal Chief and Mercenary were most prominent entering upon the course proper, with Paper Slipped handy. The run home had not long been in progress before Paper Slipper drew to the front, and had the race won a furlong from the post, going on to record a very easy victory. In a hard struggle for second money, Royal Chief beat Lazybones by a head. Mercenary was two lengths away, clear of Mob Rule, with Epie and Princess Roma well back. There was no doubt about Paper Slipper's superiority on the day. His form was a big improvement on that at Trentham, but he has always raced well on his home track. His was a sterling effort under 10st., and ho had a great reception on returning to the enclosure. Royal Chief appeared to go down with a cramped action, and certainly did not race up to his Ellerslie form. Lazybones was always well placed, but did not finish on as solidly as expected. Mercenary ran a creditable race, and Mob Rule disappointed. The latter was slow away, and was in the middle of the track when straightened up for home, and was thus never dangerous. Epic was out of his class, and was always near the rear. Davolo’s Surprise. Davolo was responsible for another surprise in winning the Midsummer Handicap, after being never further back than in second place throughout. Manetho was the first to show out, Argentic and Palady being slow to move off. Manetho was followed through the back stretch by Davolo, Fiord, Queen of Song, Wild Chase and Vintage, the last-named falling passing the five-furlong post. Manetho was still in charge entering the straight, with Davolo and Fiord in close attendance in front of Wild Chase, Queen of Song and Argentic. Manetho did not last long in the run home, and Davolo took charge from Fiord, with Wild Chase and Queen of Song challenging. Fiord could not carry on, and theij Wild Chase tackled' Davolo, and Queen,.of Song improved her position on the rails. Davolo, however, did not show any signs of being overhauled, aud his win was very decisive, while Wild Chase was all out to hold off Queen of Soug. Manetho was a fair fourth, in front of Fiord and Argentic, with Palady beateu off.

Davolo outclassed the field in the run home, .and won with something in hand. Wild Chase made a game effort, but did not finish on with his usual dash. Queen of Song made a satisfactory showing, and should be well for Dunedin. Manetho ran his best race this season, while Fiord did exceptionally well in his first attempt in such company. Argentic lost a good deal of ground early, and was not disgraced by his showing. Palady was never likely. Vintage's fall . was caused through colliding with the inside fence, and breaking a leg above the hock, his rider, A. E. Ellis, escaping with slight abrasions. Vintage travelled for over a furlong on three legs, and was later destroyed. A Solid Performance. Willie Win, favourite for the Halswell Hack Handicap, made amends for a long run of disappointments by outclassing his opponents over the business stages. Top Rank was the early leader, and with half the journey covered was well clear of Lofty, Maroha, Sovereign Lady and Gold Cross, with Recollection, Willie Win and Cerne Abbas next, and Cape Gabo last. Top Rank soon retired after entering the straight, and Lofty, Sovereign Lady, Recollection and Willie Win became prominent. These raced in a bunch passing the distance, but Willie Win then commenced to draw away from Recollection and Sovereign Lady, going on to record a convincing victory from Sovereign Lady, who got up to beat Recollection on the post Cerne Abbas came from a long way back to finish a dose fourth in front of Lofty. Capo Gabo, Gold Boy, Gold Cross and Forum.

■Willie Win revealed his true form, and more successes are now in view for him. Sovereign Lady did some solid work over the final stages, while Recollection failed to s-vo the journey out after being momentarily/') charge inside the distance. Cerne Abbas had to concede the leaders considerable ground entering the straight, and did well to bo in the final picture. An Unusual Feat.

The result of the Lyttelton Plate, for two-year-olds, was a triumph for the Chokebore stable, which supplied the three placed youngsters, who fought out a most exciting tussle over the last furlong. Top Row and Mulatto piloted the field on to the course proper from Happy Night, Loeknit. Haughty Winner, Garunite, and Nightdress. Mulatto was in sole charge after passing the distance, and was then challenged by her stablemates. Haughty Winner had his head, in front

a few strides from the post, but. Nightdress wore him down to beat him by a head. Mulatto was a neck away, a length in front of Happy Night. There was then a gap to Top Row, Garonne and Comus.

The finish was the best seen on the course for a long time. This was Nightdress’s first race. He is by Nightmarcb from Ball Dress, and his looks and performance made a big impression. Haughty Winner looked to have the race in hand when he overhauled Mulatto, but his weight—be conceded the winner 211 b—told, its tale in the last , few strides. Mulatto raced up to her track form, and will be more in evidence later. Happy Night executed a pleasing effort, but Top Row stopped badly after showing a lot of pace for half a mile. Garonne also gave an encouraging display. _ Concertpitch, first choice for the Craven Plate, carried his supporters through lifter an interesting tussle with Rebel Chief over the last two furlongs. Invoice lost a lot of ground at the start, and Gaysome and Last Refrain were also slow away. Arrowrose immediately rushed to the front, and led into the straight from Rebel Chief, Concertpitch, 1 Knockfin, Epris, Gaysome and Top Notch. Arrowrose ' soon compounded and Rebel Chief took charge from Coneertpitch, Knockfin, Epris and Gaysome. Rebel Cluel still had a useful advantage from Concertpitch after passing the distance Ppst. hut the latter collared him 100 yards from home and won well by a length. KnocKfin hung on for third, a length in front ot Gaysome, who beat Top Notch by a neck. Great Star, Joyous and Last Retrain were next, with Tuirau in last place. Coneertpitch added to his consistency by his creditable effort, but be had to be kept right up to his task to get the better of Rebel Chief, who hung on well, and ran one of his best races. Knockfin’s third was only a fair performance, and Gaysome would have beaten her in another or two. Top Notch finished very fast, and will be better served over a longer journey. Roaming Maltes Good.

' Investors again shO'eil good judgment in making A. E. Ellis’s mount Roaming first choice for the Post Handicap, as he had a convincing win. Owls Gleam was the first to show out when the field settled down, and led round .the top and into the straight from Pink Abbey, Superex, Roaming, Roy Bun and Gresham. Roaming tackled Owls Gleam inside the distance and after a brief struggle drew away and had something in reserve at the post. Rotokino came on the scene with a belated run to get within a head of Owls Gleam, witli Heloise, who got away slowly, close up next in front of Superex, Chidden, Gresham and Roy Bun, with Gold Label in last place.

Roaming has always raced well, but lias been dogged by bad luck in many of his outings. He also claims Nightmarch as his sire, and later will bo found winning over longer distances. Owls Gleam ran a solid race after having to act as pacemaker for most of the journey. Rotokino was not. prominent until the closing stages, and ho finished with a burst of speed, which would have-given him second money in another flow strides. Heloise's performance was good in the circumstances. Disappointments were Orange Bud, Chidden, Gold Label and Rose of Tralee.
