PROMINENT TARANAKI MEN INJURED

Car Plunges Into Gorge ROUGH COUNTRY IMPEDES RESCUERS By Telegraph—Press Association. New Plymouth, February 5. Two prominent Taranaki men were involved in a motor accident south of Taumarunui at 8 o’clock to-night. Mr. Albert Thorne, manager of the Stratford branch of Newton King, Ltd., was severely injured and was being taken to Taumarunui Hospital late to-night. The other occupant of the car, Mr. Truby King, general manager of Newton King, Ltd., escaped with a severe shaking. Messrs. King and Thorne were returning from a sheep fair, when between Taumarunui and Tokirima the car left the road and plunged over 300 ft. of almost sheer cliff into the gorge. Another car wa s following and the occupants immediately went to their assistance. Messrs. Thorne and King were found in the wrecked car at the bottom of the gorge. Mr. Thorne appeared to be seriously injured. Medical aid was summoned from a nearby farmhouse and an ambulance was summoned from Taumarunui Hospital. Owing to the rough nature of the country great difficulty was experienced in carrying the injured men to the road, and at a late hour to-night the ambulance had not reached hospital.
