Taranaki Refugees
in March, 1860, the Maoris in the ] Taranaki district were exercising a ] very turbulent spirit, and Maoris in j the Waikato became restive. It was j very apparent that hostilities were about to commence in the mountain set- I tlement, so numbers of settlers deter- 1 mined to send their wives and chil- i dren out of the danger, zone. Altogether t about 1200 people went from Taranaki 1 to Nelson, where a special committee ' was set up to provide ways and means of providing for the refugees. A fund < was quickly raised, and the scheme ■ carried out successfully.— E.G. (Feilding).; i
