Capture of Te Rauparaha
Te Rauparaha w-as captured on July 23, 1846, at Kapiti Island. The famous old chief was quite unaware that he was about to be taken and was alone in his whare when a small party of men from H.M.S. Calliope, under Major Durie, arrested him. John Frazer and a sailor named White were selected to go into the whare and seize him. Te Rauparaha made a great effort to break aw;ay, but was unable to do so, though he is stated to have nearly bitten White’s thumb off. He was placed aboard the Calliope and kept under guard there for some time. —Mrs. A. McK. (Petone).
