GAS PRICE RAISED

Effect of Industrial Legislation Dominion Special Service. Hastings, February 5. Interesting comment on results of the Government’s legislation were made in the address of Mr. G. S. V. Wenley to the annual meeting of the Napier Gas Co., Ltd., this morning at Napier. “Wages and salaries are increased by £1069 owing to the Government’s legislation which came into force on September 1, and to the restorations of the 5 per cent, cut,” said Mr. Wenley. “As expected, we have been able to reduce maintenance expenses, but the increase in income tax falls very heavily upon us. The new rate means the provision of £743 more than we reserved in the 1935 balance-sheet, and an increased allocation has to be made of 7/6 in the £l. As from January 1 we have therefore, with approval of the Department of Trade, made a slight increase in the net price of gas, which in the aggregate will help to meet the new conditions.” Mr. Wenley concluded by expressing thanks to the Hon. W. E. Barnard in assisting the company’s private Bill through the committee stages in the House of Representatives, and for the co-operation of the staff and workers during a somewhat difficult year.
