Four Youths Arrested on Car Conversion Charge WAIRARAPA ITEMS Dominion Special Service. Mastertoll, December 7. Smart work by the Masterton police yesterday afternoon resulted in the arrest of four youths, two of whom were charged in the court this morning with converting motor-ears to their own use, and remanded until Thursday. The other two, who are juveniles, will be dealt with on Thursday also. At 3.30 on Sunday afternoon a resident of Masterton reported to the police that his car had been removed an hour earlier from outside the Masterton Park, and Sergeant T. H. Dyer, who was motoring on the Carterton road about 3.45 p.m., noticed a car answering to the description of the missing one proceeding in the direction of Masterton. As the car was travelling at a high speed the sergeant decided not to turn round and give chase, but rang the police station from a nearby house. Constable W. Hollis accordingly made a circuit around the business block and observed a car turn sharply into the Wairarapa Farmers’ parking area. Before the engine was switched off the constable had the door open and placed the four occupants under arrest.

Pigeon Racing. The Masterton Racing Pigeon Club flew a race from Timaru on_ Saturday, the airline distance being 315 miles. The wind and weather conditions considerably hampered the birds, and only two homed in race time. Following are the details: V> . J. Miller's Betty Blue, 1: J. Wiekenss Unexpected. 2. In a flock race from Hunterville for birds which had not raced this vear. the results were:—F. Harding’s Jet Black; 1: C. J. Douglas’s Elf. 2: W. J. Miller’s Postbox, 3. Advice was received from the federation at Wanganui that Masterton won the shield for the yearling race on November 4, the New Zealand placings being J. Wiekens's, 1,2 and 3. Only four members flew in the New Zealand Old Bird Derby from Helensville, the club positions being:—W. Steer’s Skyscraper, 1; Kearns Bros.’ Red Knight, 2; W. Steer’s Nondescript. 3; F. Harding’s White Tail, 4. The next race will be from Wellsford. 350 miles, and Ohakune, 110 miles.

High School Concert. To-morrow night and again -on Wednesday pupils of the Wairarapa High School will present a concert in the Masterton parish ball. There will also be a dress parade, in which will be worn the frocks made by the pupils of the dressmaking classes.

Wooden Stable Destroyed. An old wooden stable building in Carterton, a relic of the coaching days, was destroyed by fire on Saturday night. The building was 70 or 80 years old and was situated on a section adjacent to the showgrounds. which was purchased last year by the Wairarapa P. and A. .Society. The cause of the outbreak is unknown. A considerable quantity of old timber was stored in the building, and the Carterton Fire Brigade was able to save only a small amount of it. Nether the building nor the contents was insured.

PETROL THIEF JAILED

Married Man Who Had Three Previous Chances Dominion Special Service. Palmerston North, December 7. Defendant had been given a chance on each of three occasions he had previously been before the court, but be could not expect to get chances all the time, said Mr. J. L. Stout, S.M.. to-day. when he sentenced Clifton John Towler. aged 26. to a fortnight’s imprisonment on each of two charges of theft of petrol from the Highways Transport Co.. Ltd The total amount stolen was eight gallons. Detective-Sergeant J. Bickerdike said Towler had been employed by the firm and had the keys of its premises. He took the petrol and gave it to another man. He was married, with two children, and his wife was at present in indifferent health.

AIR TRUNK SERVICE

Wanganui’s Claims For Inclusion Dominion Special Service. Wanganui, December 7. “Wanganui should be in the direct line when Union Airways establish the Wellington-Auckland service,” said Mr. A. S. Burgess, at to-night’s meeting of the Wanganui Chamber of Commerce. "There does not appear to be any reason why this city should not be included as a stopping place. In my opinion a feeder service would be useless.” Mr. Burgess added that further representations should be made to the Post-master-General and Mr. J. B. Cotterill, M.P., advancing'Wanganui's claims for inclusion in the schedule of the new service. He was supported in this view by a majority of members present, and a resolution was carried accordingly.

UNUSUAL NEGLIGENCE

Four Persons in Front of Three-seater Motor-car Palmerston North. December 7. Negligence by a motorist in having four persons in the front seat of the three-seater car he was driving was proved before Mr. J. L. Stout, S.M.. today, when Roy L. Orchard was fined £2 and costs for negligent driving. Mr. Stout said that four persons in the front seat of a three-seater must necessarily interfere with the driver either by obstructing his side view or interfering with his control of the car. The facts were that alongside Orchard at the time of the offence were seated two other persons, a fourth being partly on the end of the seat farthest from the driver and partly sitting on the knee of another passenger. Mr. J M. Grant represented Orchard. .

MAN FINED FOIL KEEPING DANGEROUS DOG

Palmerston North. December 7. When D. R. Bryce wa<s charged to-day wilh keeping a dangerous dog. defendant. Mrs. Bryce, and a neighbour, all gave evidence that the fox terrier in question was used to playing with children, and though it was often teased and had stones thrown at it. it bad not before showed signs of vieiousiiests. However, the dog did bite Joan Lt-r--rainc Mitchell, a child, on Friday. November 13. She said she was playing in a drive off Te Awe Awe Street when the dog chased her.and hit her on the fhieh. She did not tease it. Mr. J. L. Stout. S.M., considered Bryce should not have allowed the Jog ■to be teased before, and lined him £.l.
