Mr. D. S. Patrick Wins Trophy Outright PRIZE'S AND AWARDS Kown and row« of rotsea graced Horticultural Hail, Lower Hutt, yesterday when the Unit Valley Horticultural Society held its annual rose show. In declaring the show open, the Gover-nor-General, Lord Galway, briefly traced the history of the rose, which, he said, hail been introduced into England al the time of the Crusades. He also commented upon the loss of fragrance in the rose and the recent efforts to recapture the perfume. The champion of champions was a bloom of "Earl Haig” grown by Mr. D. 8. Patrick, which was also champion of the open class. The champion amateur bloom was a “Una Wallace ’ grown by Mr. W. E. Askwith, who also won the points’ prize. By registering his fifth win in the open rose section, Mr. Patrick won the 50-guinea vice-presidents’ trophy outright. Previously he and Mr. James Bell each had four wins, and both ,of , them had been within an ace of winning it outright by registering two successive wins. Mr. Patrick gained 39 points this year. Mr. E. L. Riddiford, with a display of calceolarias, won the F. R. Cooper memorial gold medal for the best exhibit in the show. The Royal Horticultural Society awards were silver-gilt medals to Mr. H. J. Poole for a display of hydrangeas and a trade exhibit, and to Mrs. A. R. Gower, whose novelty stand was one of the chief centres of attraction. Mr. L. L. Reader - won a silver medal for a display of English ferns, and bronze medals were gained by the Lower Hutt borough reserves (Mr. E. Hutt) and Mr. A. McMillan, rose and trade exhibit. Mr. 8. H. D.
